The addition of lime (calcium oxide) to the oceans may increase its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The oceans absorbs about one third of the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
However, it requires money and energy to heat limestone to the correct temperature to create calcium oxide. It is suggested that energy from renewable sources are used for this process.
